Prague Czech Republic Prague metro

The Prague Metro is a subway, representing underground public transportation system within the city of Prague. It is quite a large one, serving about one and half million passengers per day. Moreover, it is really fast, what makes it being the fastest way of transportation around the city.

The metro is guided by the Prague Public Transit Company Inc, which directs all the other means of public transport around the city as well (the metro, tramways, buses, the funicular to Petřín Hill and the chairlift inside Prague Zoo).

In 1993 the system of public transport was connected to buses and commuter trains and they has formed one public transportation network, named Prague Integrated Transport.

The Prague Metro consists of three lines, and each of them is marked with certain color and letter:

  • Line A (green)                      13 stations
  • Line B (yellow)                    24 stations
  • Line C (red)                          17 stations

The total number of underground stations is 54, including three stations, which are transfer ones. And you may transport from one station to another during the period of time from 5 a.m. till midnight every day.

Many of metro stations are large, disposing of several entrances. These are transfer stations or those, located in the centre of the city, such as Mustek or Muzeum.

The Prague Metro is an open ticket system, meaning that the passengers should buy and validate their tickets before entering the platform. They must follow ticket restrictions as well, as there are a lot of inspectors, checking the tickets within the compulsory ticket area.

The tickets in Prague are the same for all means of transport, so you may buy a ticket without knowing exactly what mean of transport you are going to take and decide later, being able to use it everywhere.

The costs for tickets:

The basic single ticket costs 20 koruna and allows 75-minute ride (or 90-minute ride during the nights, weekends, and state holidays).

The non-transferable ticket's price is 14 koruna, offering to overpass a distance in about five metro stations, allowing changes between lines A, B, and C, thought, not longer than 30 minutes in total.
