Prague Czech Republic Prague Theater

The National Theatre in Prague is known under the name The Alma Mater of Czech Opera and as the national monument of Czech history and art.

The Theatre was opened on June 11, 1881 to honor the visit of Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria. There were another eleven performances and after that the theatre was closed down in order to finish its constructions completely.

During the reconstruction works there was a fire (on August 12, 1881), what caused a lot of damages: destruction of the copper dome, the auditorium, and stage of the theatre.

This fire was regarded as a national catastrophe and all the people of Czech Republic volunteered to help. As a consequence within 47 days a million guldens were collected. The reconstruction was held under the aegis of a gifted architect, Josef Schulz.

The building of the theatre was reopened on November 18, 1883 and since that time it is one of the most illustrious cultural inns of the whole Czech Republic.

Nowadays the National Theatre consists of three artistic ensembles, which are opera, ballet, and drama.

The building of the theatre, technically greatly equipped - a steel constructed stage, electric illumination, etc, served during one hundred years without any refurbishments and renovations.

Architect Zdeněk Vávra was appointed to lead the overall reconstruction, which was completed till the 100th anniversary of the opening of the theatre (November 18, 1883).
